Tisztelt Olvasó, tisztelt Művészek!
Különös öröm számomra, hogy újra, immár a XX. Soproni Érembiennálét köszönthetem, melynek 2017-ben pedig a 40. évfordulóját fogjuk ünnepelni. Városunk számára megtisztelő, hogy legalább egy rövid időre vendégül láthatja az ország ismert művészeit, alkotóit. Sopron ezt már több évtizedes hagyomány nevében teszi, bízva abban, hogy az esemény a jövőben is folytatásra talál majd.
A város számára mindig kiemelkedő jelentőségűek voltak a területén forgalomban lévő pénznemek. A pénzérmék értékes régészeti leletnek számítanak, hiszen számos információt elárulnak egy város kereskedelméről, kapcsolatairól. Különösen így van ez Sopron esetében, amelyen a római korban átvezetett a híres Borostyánkő út, az újkorban pedig meghatározó volt számára az uralkodói székhely, Bécs közelsége.
A pénzverés mellett az érmészet másik fontos ága az emlékérmek területe, amelyekkel jelesebb eseményeknek, mint például az uralkodói látogatásoknak, békekötéseknek, koronázásoknak, neves művészek fellépéseinek, egyletek megalakulásának, épületek alapkőletételének stb. állítottak emléket.
Manapság inkább a művészi céllal készült érmek, plakettek kerültek előtérbe, amelyeknek nincsen közvetlen gyakorlati szerepe. Az Érembiennále továbbra is számít azonban a szakma mellett a szélesebb közönség érdeklődésére is. Az érmekről gyakran tekintenek vissza ránk múltunk jeles politikusai, írói, költői, zeneszerzői, tudósai, így a történelem, az irodalom iránt érdeklődők is megtalálhatják a számukra vonzó darabokat.
A múltban Sopron a kultúra több területén is képes volt vonzerőt kifejteni, hiszen itt alakított tudós társaságot a humanista polgármester, Lackner Kristóf, később pedig itt adott koncerteket Liszt Ferenc is. Az Érembiennále művészeiről is elmondható immár, hogy Sopron legújabb kori művelődésének szerves részei. Bízom abban, hogy ez így marad a jövőben is.

Ladies and Gentlemen
It is a special pleasure for me to be able to welcome the 20th Medal Biennial in Sopron, which will celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017. It is a great honour for the city to host – at least for a short time – so many well-known artists and creators of the country. This we do in the name of a decades old tradition, hoping that this sequence will go on in the future, too.
Currencies in circulation in the area of the town have always had importance here. Coins are valuable archaeological finds, revealing lots of information about a town’s commercial relations, contacts. This applied to Sopron emphatically, as in the Roman times the Amber Road passed through it and in modern times the proximity of the monarchic centre Vienna was decisive.
Besides minted coins, numismatics has a role in commemoration of notable events, as medals can perpetuate the memory of monarchs’ visit, signing of peace treaties, coronations, performances of great artists, establishment of societies, laying the foundation stone of buildings, among other things.
Nowadays, autonomous artistic medals, plaques have come to the fore, which have no direct practical function. Still, beside the narrower group of professionals, the Medal Biennale has its appeal to the wider public interested in history, literature, arts, as the medals on display often feature noted politicians, writers, poets, composers, scholars of our past. Everybody can find pieces to their liking.
In the past, Sopron was able to contribute to several areas of culture. The humanist mayor Kristóf Lackner formed a scholarly society here; later Ferenc Liszt gave concerts in the town. It is true of the Medal Biennial, too, that it has become an integral element of the most recent history of Sopron. I sincerely hope that it will remain so in the future, too.
