Today we have arrived at a memorable anniversary: we are celebrating the opening of the 16th National Medal Biennial, a series launched thirty years ago. Our town is proud of its cultural historical past, its history and not least its prestigeous events. The two-yearly presentation of noted Hungarian and local medallists is one of the highlights of the Festive Weeks and fills my fellow town-dwellers and the visitors with joyful expectation. As the mayor of the city of Sopron, I have the honour and pleasure to welcome again and greet the exhibiting artists and our art-loving and art-patronizing public.
On behalf of our local government, I express our heartfelt gratitude to all those whose spiritual and financial support enables us to recall a successful past. I must thank separately the institutions and private persons who have donated prizes for their unselfish support. I also thank the indefatiguable Organizing Committee and the Sopron Museum, as well as the Advisory Office of Fine and Applied Arts for their efforts to stage high-level Biennials. I am also soliciting all our previous supporters to keep cherishing the cause of the Biennials.
Our city also tries to give every help to promote a successful future. It is one of our plans to turn the Reipál House into a centre of culture where the rich medal stock of the municipality could be displayed from time to time in addition to permanent exhibitions. With these hopes in mind I wish all participating artist unslackening work, much success and for the rest of us, excellent aesthetic experiences.
