Dear Visitors,
In 1996, Sopron celebrated the 75th anniver-sary of the plebiscite at which the majority of the population proclaimed that they wished to remain Hungarians. In memory and gratitude for this, the nation gave the city the title of Civitas Fidelissima (the most loyal city) which was laid down in an act of Parliament as well. This loyalty, however, dates from earlier, as the city had opened their gates to the legitimate Hungarian king in the Middle Ages already, although the citizens children were in the cap¬tivity of the Czech king.
The most loyal city is also faithful to medal art, the Biennial of Medal Art, for it is the eleventh time already that the most beautiful works of the country's medal artists have been exhibit¬ed here. This is though not an easy task, but the city is proud of the fact that Sopron has remained the home of this biennial exhibition. Faithful to this Biennial are also the organizing factors and the artists many of whom have been participating since the very first exhibi¬tion.
In the name of the City of Sopron, I wish all visi¬tors of the Biennial a pleasant stay.
Dr. Szabolcs Gimesi
Mayor of the City of Sopron
